Tahoe Media Group's Made-for-Mobile® device market penetration

Although there are many devices that provide varying degrees of mobile internet functionality, just a few models account for the vast majority of the market.  Specifically, R.I.M.’s BlackBerry, Apple’s iPhone, Palm’s Treo, and LG’s Voyager collectively account for the vast majority of mobile internet devices.

Apple’s iPhone has the distinction of having the attained the fastest growth in sales of any consumer electronic device in history.  Over five million units have been sold in the short time since its launch.  R.I.M’s BlackBerry, a common sight in professional circles for years, boasts tens of millions of phones shipped.

As service providers continue to build out and improve the cellular networks, and volume drives cost down, these devices will be nearly universal. Since the size of people’s pockets is unlikely to grow significantly, it is reasonable to have confidence that future phones will have roughly similar size and other characteristics to the Apple iPhone of today.  The sheer number of cellular phone users yields the startling revelation that there will soon be more mobile web devices visiting websites than normal computers!  Accommodating mobile web users will be as important in overall marketing strategy as a traditional website is currently.
